Masterclass in Green Wood Spoon Carving with Julian from Littlebear Sloyd


Join Julian (@littlebear_sloyd) and assistant Neil (@greenwoodadventure) for a masterclass over four weeks and explore the essential skills and knowledge of this useful greenwood craft. Walk away with a thorough foundational knowledge including safe and effective knife and axe work, wood selection, managing moisture content, and practical techniques for drying, finish cuts, oiling / waxing, and caring for your work.

You’ll go home with new skills and knowledge, and a variety of finished items that could include spoons, butter spreaders, chopsticks, small bowls, and spatulas – according to your own creative interests.

This course will introduce you to the quiet, satisfying, and productive craft of green woodworking, with a deep dive into spoon-carving as our main focus.

Before the industrial revolution and the advent of mass-produced metal cutlery, hand-carved wooden spoons were a staple utensil of every household. They were carved green from local timber, by a local artisan, or at home by a crafty member of the family. By returning to these ancient roots and foregoing modern machine milled and kiln dried lumber, we can learn to get closer to nature as a community of craftspeople, and understand and appreciate the history of our craft better as well.

What you will learn:

  • greenwood selection / sourcing, cleaving, and moisture management
  • foundational carving axe, sloyd knife, and hook knife skills
  • about green woodwork as an accessible and rewarding pursuit
  • a deep dive into spoon-carving methods and traditions
  • techniques to finish your work and the opportunity to refine your knife skills

What you will get:

  • a variety of your own hand-carved treen (useful carved wooden items)
  • Julian's mix of organic hemp seed oil and natural beeswax for finishing/maintaining your work, and instructions to make your own at home
  • advice and recommendations on beginner/budget-friendly tools to get started in this rewarding craft

All tools, materials and supper will be provided.

About Julian

Julian is a certified wooden spoon tragic and has carved more spoons than he could count or keep track of. Julian has become interested and involved in most aspects of historically informed green woodwork – including spoon-carving, bowl turning and the pole lathe, chairmaking and blacksmithing as well. He works from his home studio in Perth’s inner south. 

Joining together the craft of spoon carving and the study of material culture history is Julian’s way to rediscover the role of the wooden spoon and other domestic treen. Julian uses his spoons every day and encourages others to make functional objects and do the same. You can find more about his work and craft here.

About Neil

Neil came to green woodworking through his fascination with the wood he chopped for his fire place. For him it’s a creative outlet that was accessible and could be done in a suburban backyard. He feels it’s a great way for people to be creative, making everyday objects for use in the home. Neil carves spoons, bowls, and other treen. You can find Neil’s work in the Zigzag art gallery shop in Kalamunda.
